From July 5 to September 30 2012. MEDIATE Art Group is excited to announce this summer’s return of the 5th Soundwave entitled HUMANITIES, exploring sonic connections to the human experience. The largest celebration of Bay Area’s avant-sound and art scene, Soundwave ((5)) HUMANITES features over 90 artists and musicians in more than 35 inspired performances, concerts, exhibits and conferences over the span of three full months.

Kicking off with a monumental opening celebration at the California Academy of Sciences, this season partners with some of the most important Bay Area cultural institutions. HUMANITIES offers astonishing experiences, including futuristic Bionic performances at The Lab, revelatory moments at San Francisco Zen Center and The Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist, interactive events at Intersection for the Arts, and special installations at historic Battery Townsley in the Marin Headlands. An additional conference features future human panels at San Francisco Art Institute, all culminating in a final concert in the grand courtyard of the Legion of Honor. The eclectic array of artists includes Bay Area luminaries choral ensemble Volti, rock band Lumerians, musician Jon Porras, media artist Kadet Kuhne, storied orchestra Oakland Active Orchestra, interactive artists from UC Santa Cruz’s OpenLab/Mechatronics Group, as well as national and international artists such as New York’s Eli Kezler, Scottish artist Stephen Hurrel, Costa Rican duo M+V, and Canadian artist Diana Burgoyne, among others.

“These innovative artists and musicians will uncover the future of humanity from bionic brainwave instrumentations, subconscious realities, technohuman immersions, Zen-inspired performances, hybrid mythologies, new dimensions, and other artist imaginations,” says Alan So, Soundwave Festival & Artistic Director. “Soundwave promises to captivate audiences with unique experiences one won’t soon forget, while challenging people to reflect on who we are, individually and collectively, and where we are going during this year of the Mayan Calendar end and the 2012 apocalyptic theories.”

An acclaimed biennial of innovative sound, art and music, Soundwave launches a thematic summer-long, multi-venue and multi-date experiential event series all over San Francisco. Inviting diverse multidisciplinary artists and musicians to explore the season’s concept in innovative directions, Soundwave has offered adventurous productions in WWII bunkers, moving buses, famed sculptures, historic churches, streets, parks, museums and galleries throughout the city. Past seasons have included: Free Sound (2004), Surround Sound (2006) and Move Sound (2008) and Green Sound (2010). Soundwave won Best ’07 Award and was called a ‘Future Classic’ by San Francisco Magazine, ‘Inspired’ by 7×7, ‘Unique and participatory’ by SF Chronicle, ‘Expertly Curated’ and ‘Magical’ by SF Weekly, as well as featured on the PBS-affiliate KQED TV program SPARK*, with an Educator’s Guide on experimental music.
